Study Abroad at Vancouver Island University
The keys to the VFS educational model are structured intensity and immersion in the industry. Vancouver Film School was founded on the philosophy that one year of concentrated work, that balances industry-led theory and hands-on production, gives students the necessary skills to craft a professional-level portfolio or reel.
VFS offers 15 signature post-secondary programs — spanning every aspect of the entertainment arts — that are developed and taught by award-winning industry professionals. Each program’s intensive curriculum evolves along with demands of the industry, and the best, current industry practices.
Students’ experiences emulate the professional industry world. Students are physically and mentally immersed in Vancouver’s film, animation, game, and design industries that surround our campuses, and benefit from career guidance and expertise from industry mentors, instructors, and guest speakers.

Spring Break
- Film Production | Cinematic Storytelling
- What does baking a cake and making a film have in common? It requires a “recipe”. But instead of flour, butter, eggs and sugar – it takes story, acting, lighting, directing, camera, and much more to make a movie. This intensive, hands-on workshop will teach you the basics of cinematic storytelling and give you a taste of VFS’s one-year Film Production program.
- Animation & Visual Effects | Visual Effects for Film
- Have you ever wondered how filmmakers create the visual effects and environments for Star Wars, or Game of Thrones? Are you interested in harnessing both your technical and creative skills into a highly sought-after career? Join us for a two-day intensive workshop led by industry professionals to learn firsthand how they create these spectacular images. Starting with a brief introduction of behind-the-scenes breakdowns, you will gain experience using professional quality assets and software to key & composite into a final scene.
- Makeup for Stage & Screen | From Trauma to Tattoos 1
- In this workshop, you will create painted skulls to better understand facial anatomy and the principles of highlight & shadow. Then, you will learn to create tattoo transfers – designed by yourself! You’ll also learn about and apply various injury makeups: blood, bruises, cuts, and black eyes. And finally, you will apply & colour the tattoos you designed.
- Acting | Audition. Cast. Shoot – Page to Screen in 2 days
- Spend two days discovering what it’s like to be an actor. Join us for an on-camera audition and acting intensive in a small group setting. This interactive workshop will get you into the text, on your feet, and in front of the camera. We will cover scene breakdown, character development, and camera fundamentals to get you prepped for the shoot. Your audition and scene work will be led by our industry professionals and you’ll finish the workshop with the raw footage from your shoot and a taste for the fast-paced life of a working actor in Vancouver.
- Foundation | Visual Art & Design Fundamentals
Do you wish your creative projects could be a true representation of your awesome ideas? Unlock your creative potential in a workshop that begins by introducing proven tools to help you move past the fear that might be blocking you. Take those ideas into sketches and artwork, digitize with powerful design software to add colour, texture, & typography, and turn your art into a video representing how fearlessly creative you truly are.
